(And, important note: Neither the bot nor its minders have a say in any word that appears as a Wordle solution.) It sounds straightforward, but words like ADOBO, BRONC, ALEPH, PISTE, ASPER and DUOMO might seem common to some readers and utterly foreign to others. As a guideline, we’ve aimed to include as many words as possible that we think a normal Times reader might have encountered before. This, of course, is a judgment call, and many words are open to interpretation.

WordleBot considers only the roughly 4,500 words that we, its creators, estimate might one day be a solution. Some of these - SYBBE, YCOND, IMMEW - are rather obscure. There are almost 13,000 five-letter words in the Wordle dictionary. I selected an English word and an accepted Wordle guess, so why is the bot telling me it’s probably not a solution? Technically, these ratings are in units of “bits,” a term that draws on information theory, but we put them in percentage terms from 0 to 100 with a new column, which we call “Info Gained.” The best guesses advance your information meter the most. The bot now optimizes for the total amount of new information your guess provides. A word like PUNKY, for example, which the bot previously could have given a skill score of zero, will now be judged more fairly. Now, without knowledge of which words can be solutions, it rewards guesses that are expected to reveal the most information about which words might remain.įurthermore, because the bot is using a more expansive dictionary instead of the narrower Wordle solution list, that changes how the bot scores guesses that are not valid solutions. WordleBot previously rewarded guesses that divided remaining solutions into as many groups as possible.
